Preparing for an interview feels overwhelming when you have never done it before. Most beginners focus only on the day itself, missing the steps that happen before and after. This checklist covers both phases so nothing falls through.
Before the Interview
- Research the organisation: Spend at least 30 minutes reading the company website, recent news from an online news portal, and any public reports. Knowing what the organisation does shows genuine interest.
- Prepare three to five stories: Think of real situations where you solved a problem, worked in a team, or handled pressure. Short, specific stories are more convincing than general claims.
- Plan your route and timing: Arrive 10 minutes early. Rushing before an interview affects how you come across in the first few minutes.
- Prepare questions to ask: Interviewers expect you to ask something. Prepare two or three questions about the role or team structure.
After the Interview
- Send a follow-up email within 24 hours: Thank the interviewer briefly and mention one specific topic from the conversation. This takes five minutes and is rarely done by beginners.
- Note what felt difficult: Write down any questions that caught you off guard. This is your preparation material for the next interview.
- Avoid over-checking your email: Decisions take time. Use the waiting period to apply elsewhere rather than fixating on one outcome.
Each step here is small on its own, but skipping any of them creates visible gaps in how prepared you appear.
